The Age of the Eternal Dominion
The Kingdoms Beneath the Night
Following the foundation of the Eternal Throne, vampiric civilization entered an age of unprecedented expansion. The descendants of the First Blood spread across the ancient world, establishing hidden sanctuaries beneath the growing kingdoms of mankind. While mortal civilizations rose and fell beneath the Sun, the immortals accumulated knowledge, influence, and power across generations that ordinary human beings could scarcely comprehend. Ancient vampires became advisers to kings, guardians of forgotten temples, scholars of forbidden knowledge, and silent rulers of territories whose mortal inhabitants remained unaware of their existence.

At the center of this expanding civilization stood Lavínia, the Eternal Source, first of the vampires and origin of every Bloodline. Her authority was recognized throughout the immortal realm, and the great Bloodlines served as pillars supporting the order established during the Crimson Convocation. Each Bloodline was governed by an Arch Vampire, whose responsibility extended beyond the protection of their immediate descendants. The Arch Vampires preserved ancient traditions, maintained the continuity of their lineages, and exercised authority over the Clans and Houses that had developed beneath them.

For centuries, this structure brought relative stability to the immortal world. Rivalries existed, but disputes were generally resolved through negotiation, blood oaths, or the intervention of the Eternal Court. The oldest vampires understood that open warfare could endanger the secrecy upon which their civilization depended. Mortal kingdoms might tolerate legends of supernatural beings, but the discovery of entire immortal armies could provoke fear and organized resistance. For this reason, the Eternal Throne encouraged discretion, restraint, and the preservation of the ancient bonds that united the First Blood.

Yet prosperity gradually transformed the ambitions of the Arch Vampires. Some controlled territories larger than mortal kingdoms, while others commanded descendants whose numbers exceeded the populations of entire cities. Their influence extended across trade routes, royal courts, and military institutions. As their power increased, several began to question why they remained subject to laws established by an ancestor they rarely encountered. They acknowledged that Lavínia had given rise to their blood, but argued that centuries of leadership, conquest, and sacrifice had earned them the right to govern independently.

The Eternal Dominion had brought unity to the immortal realm. It had also created the conditions for its greatest division.

The Crimson Edicts
The Laws of the First Blood
The earliest warnings of instability reached the Eternal Court through reports of disputes between powerful Bloodlines. Several Arch Vampires had begun expanding their territories without the consent of neighboring lineages, while others demanded absolute obedience from descendants who wished to establish Houses of their own. In certain regions, rival Clans fought through mortal intermediaries, manipulating human conflicts to weaken competing families without openly violating the ancient prohibition against war between vampires.

Lavínia recognized the danger. She had witnessed the destruction of civilizations before the Great Flood, the collapse of Babel, and the countless kingdoms that had disappeared beneath the ambitions of mortal rulers. She understood that immortality did not eliminate pride, jealousy, or the desire for dominion. Instead, it allowed such emotions to survive for centuries, gathering strength until even the oldest friendships could be destroyed by resentment.

To preserve the unity of the immortal realm, the Eternal Source summoned the representatives of the great Bloodlines and proclaimed a collection of laws remembered as the Crimson Edicts. These decrees established that no Arch Vampire could destroy another recognized Bloodline for territorial ambition, that the Embrace must be performed with responsibility, and that disputes threatening the wider immortal realm could be brought before the Eternal Court. They also reaffirmed that recognized Clans and Houses existed beneath the authority of their Bloodlines and, ultimately, the Eternal Throne.

The Edicts did not abolish the internal authority of the Arch Vampires. They could continue governing their descendants, preserving their traditions, and directing the affairs of their territories. However, their power would no longer be considered absolute when exercised against other members of the immortal civilization.

To the loyal Bloodlines, the Crimson Edicts represented a necessary defense against tyranny and the destruction of the First Blood. To their opponents, they represented the beginning of an intolerable centralization of authority. The same laws that protected smaller Houses from powerful elders also prevented ambitious Arch Vampires from expanding their dominions without consequence.

The disagreement was initially political. It would soon become personal.

The Question of Sovereignty
The central dispute concerned a question that the Crimson Convocation had never fully resolved: whether the First Blood granted Lavínia permanent authority over every descendant who inherited it. Loyalists maintained that the Eternal Source was not merely an ancestor, but the living foundation of vampiric civilization. Her authority preserved the order that allowed the Bloodlines to coexist.

Others argued that the gift of immortality did not constitute an eternal obligation of political obedience. A vampire might owe gratitude and respect to the origin of their existence without surrendering the right to determine their own destiny.

Among those who defended this position was an ancient Arch Vampire whose name would become inseparable from the history of rebellion.

Vaelthar, the Uncrowned.

Vaelthar, the Uncrowned
The Arch Vampire Who Would Not Kneel
The earliest records describe Vaelthar as one of the most powerful descendants of the ancient Bloodlines. His exact age remains uncertain, although several manuscripts claim that he had already witnessed the rise and destruction of kingdoms whose names were forgotten long before the Crimson Convocation. He was renowned for his military discipline, political intelligence, and extraordinary command over the vampires who served beneath his banner.

Vaelthar had not always opposed the Eternal Throne. During the early centuries of the Eternal Dominion, he had supported the creation of common laws and defended the principle that the Bloodlines should remain united. His warriors protected remote sanctuaries, and his representatives participated in negotiations intended to prevent conflicts between rival Clans. Some accounts suggest that Lavínia herself once regarded him as a valuable defender of the immortal realm.

But Vaelthar believed that the Eternal Throne had gradually transformed from an institution of unity into an authority that restricted the sovereignty of the Bloodlines. He argued that the Arch Vampires were responsible for their own descendants and should possess the right to establish laws within their territories without intervention from the Eternal Court.

His supporters were not united by a single ambition. Some wished to govern their Bloodlines independently, while others resented restrictions upon territorial expansion. A smaller faction believed that vampires should abandon secrecy and establish dominion over humanity. Vaelthar attempted to unite these conflicting interests beneath one principle: that no immortal should be compelled to obey a sovereign solely because of the blood within their veins.

The Council of Unbound Blood
Vaelthar eventually proposed the creation of a council composed of the great Arch Vampires. Under his proposal, the Eternal Source would remain honored as the origin of vampiric existence, but the political authority of the realm would be shared among the leaders of the Bloodlines. The council would possess the power to review decrees, resolve disputes, and prevent any single authority from governing the immortal world without the consent of its principal lineages.

The proposal attracted considerable support. Several Arch Vampires believed that such a council would preserve unity while granting the Bloodlines greater independence. Others saw an opportunity to weaken the Eternal Throne and expand their personal influence.

When the proposal was presented before the Eternal Court, Lavínia acknowledged the concerns of the Bloodlines but refused to surrender the ultimate responsibility entrusted to the Eternal Throne. She warned that a council governed by competing ambitions could transform every disagreement into a struggle for supremacy. The oldest and strongest Bloodlines might dominate the weaker, and the unity of the immortal realm could become dependent upon alliances that changed with every generation.

Vaelthar interpreted the refusal as proof that the Throne would never willingly recognize the independence of its descendants.

According to the Testimony of the Uncrowned, he removed the ceremonial emblem of his allegiance before the assembled Court and declared:

"You gave us eternity, Lavínia. You did not give us chains."

The declaration shocked the gathering. No Arch Vampire of comparable influence had publicly renounced the authority of the Eternal Source.

Vaelthar departed the Court without kneeling.

Within the following years, other leaders began to follow him.

The Night of Broken Oaths
The Gathering of the Rebellion
The first organized opposition to the Eternal Throne emerged through secret meetings among dissatisfied Arch Vampires and Clan leaders. These gatherings took place in abandoned fortresses, remote sanctuaries, and territories beyond the immediate influence of the Eternal Court. Their participants disagreed upon many matters, but shared a determination to resist the Crimson Edicts.

The movement became known as the Unbound Covenant, a coalition of Bloodlines and Clans that rejected the principle of compulsory allegiance to the Eternal Throne. Its members swore loyalty to one another rather than to Lavínia, promising mutual protection against attempts to enforce the authority of the Court.

Initially, the rebellion remained political. Representatives of the Unbound Covenant refused to recognize certain judgments, withheld assistance from loyalist Clans, and declared their territories independent. Several Houses attempted to remain neutral, fearing that choosing either side would divide their families.

The Eternal Court dispatched emissaries to negotiate, and Velkarion Yana personally supported efforts to prevent violence. She understood that war between immortals could endure far longer than conflicts among mortals. A grievance that might disappear within a human generation could survive for centuries among vampires.

But negotiations became increasingly difficult as extremists on both sides demanded decisive action.

The First Blood Spilled
The event that transformed the rebellion into war occurred at an ancient sanctuary remembered as the Sanctuary of the Seven Veils. The sanctuary had long served as neutral ground where vampires from different Bloodlines could seek refuge, exchange knowledge, and settle disputes without violence.

According to loyalist chronicles, warriors associated with the Unbound Covenant entered the sanctuary and attempted to seize its archives, believing that the records contained ancient oaths that could be used to challenge their claims of independence. When the guardians refused, violence erupted.

The rebel accounts tell a different story. They claim that loyalist forces had already occupied the sanctuary and intended to imprison representatives of the Unbound Covenant who had arrived seeking negotiations.

The truth remains uncertain. The archives suffered extensive destruction, and many of the witnesses perished during the confrontation.

What survived was the memory of the first organized slaughter between the great factions of the immortal realm.

The Sanctuary of the Seven Veils burned through the night. Ancient manuscripts were reduced to ashes, blood oaths were broken, and vampires who had once regarded one another as kin fought beneath the collapsing halls.

The event became known as the Night of Broken Oaths.

When news reached the Eternal Court, the possibility of peaceful reconciliation began to disappear.

The First War
Blood Against Blood
The conflict that followed became known as the First War, or, in the oldest chronicles, the Crimson Schism. Unlike the wars of mankind, it was fought by beings whose lives could extend across centuries and whose supernatural abilities made even small confrontations extraordinarily destructive.

The war divided Bloodlines, Clans, and Houses. Some Arch Vampires remained loyal to the Eternal Source, while others joined the Unbound Covenant. In several families, sires and their descendants found themselves on opposing sides. Houses that had endured for generations were divided by conflicting oaths, and ancient friendships collapsed beneath accusations of betrayal.

The conflict spread across the hidden territories of the immortal world. Fortresses changed hands, sanctuaries were destroyed, and networks of mortal influence became instruments of war. Vampires manipulated human rulers, redirected armies, and used the rivalries of mortal kingdoms to weaken their supernatural enemies.

For many younger vampires, the war represented a tragedy they had not chosen. Their allegiance was often determined by the Bloodline into which they had been Embraced, and refusal to follow their elders could result in exile or persecution.

The ancient chronicles describe entire Houses abandoning their ancestral territories rather than fighting members of their own families. Others entered hibernation, hoping to awaken after the conflict had ended.

But the war continued, and the immortal realm descended into an age of uncertainty.

The War of Shadows
The earliest campaigns were characterized by secrecy, deception, and sudden attacks. Both factions understood that large supernatural battles could attract the attention of humanity, threatening the concealment upon which their civilization depended.

Loyalist forces concentrated upon protecting the ancient sanctuaries and preserving communication between the Bloodlines that remained faithful to the Eternal Throne. The rebels targeted supply routes, isolated fortresses, and the political networks through which the Court maintained its influence.

Mental disciplines became particularly dangerous during this period. Powerful vampires used supernatural suggestion and domination to influence mortal servants, extract information, and turn trusted agents against their masters. The ability to recognize the presence of other immortals through Blood Sense became equally valuable, allowing experienced warriors to detect ambushes and identify hidden enemies.

The conflict also transformed the understanding of vampiric combat. Age and supernatural power remained decisive advantages, but discipline, coordination, and strategy could allow smaller forces to defeat stronger opponents.

These lessons would endure long after the First War, shaping the military traditions of Clans and the combat practices of future generations.

The March of the Sentinels
Velkarion Yana, Voice of the Throne
Throughout the early years of the war, Velkarion Yana remained one of the principal defenders of reconciliation. As the First Sentinel and Herald of the Eternal Source, she carried Lavínia's authority throughout the realm and attempted to persuade rebellious Bloodlines to abandon the conflict.

Her efforts were not entirely unsuccessful. Several Clans withdrew from the Unbound Covenant after negotiations, and some neutral Houses accepted protection under the Eternal Court. Yet the destruction of the Sanctuary of the Seven Veils had created wounds that diplomacy alone could not heal.

When open warfare became unavoidable, Yana assumed responsibility for coordinating the loyalist response. She organized communication between the Bloodlines, established defensive agreements, and ensured that the Court's remaining sanctuaries could support one another.

Her greatest strength was not the ability to destroy enemies, but the discipline to understand them. She recognized that the rebellion contained both genuine grievances and dangerous ambitions, and she warned loyalist commanders against treating every dissenter as an enemy deserving destruction.

The surviving manuscripts attribute to her a principle that would later become central to the Eternal Court:

"A kingdom preserved through hatred shall inherit nothing but hatred."

Nestis, the Unbroken Vigil
While Yana coordinated the political and strategic defense of the Eternal Throne, Sentinel Nestis devoted herself to protecting those most vulnerable to the conflict. She organized the evacuation of threatened Houses, established guarded refuges, and oversaw the preservation of manuscripts that might otherwise have disappeared during the destruction of ancient sanctuaries.

The chronicles describe Nestis as a guardian whose patience became legendary. She understood that the survival of the immortal realm depended not only upon victory in battle, but upon preserving the descendants and knowledge that would allow civilization to continue afterward.

Under her protection, many young vampires survived the war without being forced to participate directly in the conflict. The archives she preserved later became essential to the reconstruction of the Bloodlines.

Her service earned her a title remembered in the oldest loyalist accounts:

The Unbroken Vigil.

Lyri, the Crimson Resolve
Sentinel Lyri became one of the most prominent military leaders of the loyalist forces. Where Yana sought negotiation and Nestis defended the vulnerable, Lyri confronted the armies that threatened the Eternal Throne.

Her campaigns were marked by determination, discipline, and an unwillingness to abandon those under her command. The chronicles describe her leading warriors through ruined fortresses, recovering territories captured by the Unbound Covenant, and defending the approaches to the most important loyalist sanctuaries.

Lyri's reputation spread across both factions. To the loyalists, she became a symbol of courage and unwavering service. To the rebels, she represented the military strength of a Throne they believed had denied them freedom.

Yet even Lyri was not untouched by the tragedy of the war. Several manuscripts describe her mourning warriors from opposing factions, recognizing that many had fought out of loyalty to their sires rather than hatred toward the Eternal Source.

The First War had transformed the children of the First Blood into enemies.

But it had not erased their shared ancestry.

The Siege of the Hollow Crown
The Fortress of the Uncrowned
As the war continued, Vaelthar established his principal stronghold within an ancient fortress known as the Hollow Crown. Built upon a remote height and protected by formidable walls, the fortress became the political and military center of the Unbound Covenant.

Its name reflected the philosophy of the rebellion. The Hollow Crown represented sovereignty without submission to a supreme monarch, a symbol intended to remind its followers that no single immortal should claim dominion over all others.

For years, the fortress served as a refuge for rebel leaders, a gathering place for their armies, and a repository of the oaths that bound the Unbound Covenant together.

But as loyalist forces recovered territories and several rebel Clans withdrew from the conflict, the Hollow Crown became increasingly isolated.

The Eternal Court recognized that the capture of the fortress could bring an end to organized warfare. Yet an assault also risked destroying the remaining leadership of the rebellion, leaving surviving factions without representatives capable of negotiating peace.

Velkarion Yana therefore proposed a final opportunity for surrender.

Vaelthar refused.

Fourteen Nights of War
The siege began beneath a moon concealed by storm clouds. Loyalist forces surrounded the approaches to the Hollow Crown, while the defenders prepared for a confrontation they believed would determine the future of vampiric sovereignty.

For thirteen nights, neither faction achieved a decisive victory. The defenders used the fortress's ancient passages and elevated positions to resist repeated assaults, while the loyalists attempted to isolate the stronghold and prevent reinforcements from reaching its walls.

The fighting was brutal. Ancient warriors fell, defensive chambers collapsed, and sections of the fortress were consumed by fire. The surrounding valleys became places of mourning, where the survivors gathered the remains of those whose immortal existence had finally ended.

On the fourteenth night, Lyri led an assault that broke through the outer defenses. At the same time, Yana's forces secured the principal passages connecting the fortress to its remaining allies, preventing the rebel commanders from escaping or receiving reinforcements.

Vaelthar realized that continued resistance would bring the destruction of the warriors who had followed him.

He ordered the fighting to cease.

The Uncrowned surrendered his fortress, but he did not surrender his beliefs.

The Judgment of the Eternal Source
The Return to the Eternal Court
Following the fall of the Hollow Crown, Vaelthar and the surviving leaders of the Unbound Covenant were brought before the Eternal Court. The gathering was attended by representatives of the loyal Bloodlines, commanders who had survived the war, and witnesses whose families had been divided by the conflict.

Many demanded punishment. Some argued that Vaelthar and his principal supporters should be destroyed for challenging the authority of the Eternal Source. Others insisted that the rebellious Bloodlines should be dissolved and their surviving descendants placed under loyalist supervision.

Lavínia listened to the accusations without interruption.

She had watched the immortal civilization grow from its earliest beginnings. She remembered the first Embraces, the destruction of the ancient world, and the generations of vampires who had struggled to preserve their existence. Now she stood before descendants who had fought one another over the meaning of the eternity she had given them.

The chronicles describe a prolonged silence before the Eternal Source finally addressed the assembled Court.

She declared that the rebellion had brought suffering upon the immortal realm and that those responsible for violence could not escape accountability. Yet she also recognized that allegiance obtained through fear could never become genuine loyalty.

The Eternal Throne could demand obedience from those who willingly accepted its protection and authority. It could defend itself against aggression. But it could not transform every independent will into a loyal subject without becoming the very tyranny its laws had been intended to prevent.

The Severing of the Blood
Vaelthar was permitted to speak before judgment was pronounced. Though defeated, he maintained that the Arch Vampires possessed the right to determine their own political destiny.

He declared that if allegiance to the Eternal Throne was considered inseparable from the First Blood, then he would renounce the blood itself.

The declaration became known as the Severing of the Blood.

According to the Testimony of the Uncrowned, Vaelthar demanded that his lineage be recognized as independent from the authority of Lavínia, claiming that his descendants should no longer be bound by the obligations established through their shared origin.

Lavínia answered with words that would become among the most famous in the history of the immortal realm:

"You may reject my throne. You may reject my laws. You may even curse my name for all eternity. But you cannot reject the blood that gave you life. For even in rebellion, you remain my child."

The Court fell silent.

The Eternal Source had acknowledged a distinction that would forever shape vampiric civilization. Political allegiance could be rejected, but ancestry could not be erased. Every vampire remained descended from the First Blood, regardless of the banner beneath which they chose to stand.

The judgment did not end the philosophical disagreement between the factions.

It gave that disagreement a permanent place within the history of the realm.

The Birth of the Hordes
Those Who Would Not Bow
Rather than ordering the destruction of every rebellious Bloodline, Lavínia permitted those who rejected the authority of the Eternal Throne to depart from its political order.

They would no longer possess the privileges granted to recognized Clans and Houses, nor could they claim the protection or representation of the Eternal Court. They would be free to establish their own organizations, provided they did not violate the peace through renewed aggression against the loyal Bloodlines.

These independent organizations became known as Hordes.

Unlike Clans, which existed beneath the recognized authority of Bloodlines loyal to the Eternal Throne, Hordes acknowledged no obligation of political allegiance to Lavínia. Their members were united by their own oaths, traditions, and leaders.

Some Hordes preserved Vaelthar's original philosophy of independence, believing that immortality should never require submission to a sovereign. Others gradually developed more aggressive ambitions, viewing the Eternal Throne as an obstacle to the expansion of their power.

The rebellion had not produced a single unified nation of independent vampires.

It had created a tradition of resistance that would survive across generations.

The First Outcasts
Not every vampire wished to remain loyal to the Eternal Throne or join the emerging Hordes. During the war, many had abandoned both factions, refusing to participate in a conflict they believed had corrupted the ancient bonds of the First Blood.

Some had lost their sires, their Houses, or their faith in the institutions that once governed their existence. Others simply desired freedom from political allegiance of any kind.

These solitary immortals became known as Outcasts.

Unlike the Hordes, Outcasts did not necessarily organize themselves around a shared political philosophy. They wandered independently, formed temporary alliances, or lived in isolation beyond the established structures of vampiric society.

To the loyalists, they were often regarded with suspicion because they existed outside the authority of the Eternal Court. To the Hordes, they were sometimes viewed as unwilling to defend the freedom they enjoyed.

Yet the Outcasts represented another consequence of the First War: the recognition that some vampires would choose neither loyalty nor rebellion, but solitude.

The Fate of Vaelthar
The Disappearance of the Uncrowned
The surviving chronicles disagree upon what became of Vaelthar after the judgment of the Eternal Source. Some claim that he departed the Eternal Court accompanied by a small number of loyal followers, disappearing into territories beyond the knowledge of the ancient Bloodlines.

Other accounts suggest that he entered a prolonged state of hibernation within a forgotten sanctuary, awaiting an age when the Hordes might once again unite beneath a common cause.

A third tradition claims that Vaelthar continued to wander among mortal civilizations, concealing his identity while observing the evolution of the immortal realm he had helped divide.

No surviving account provides conclusive evidence of his final fate.

Among certain Hordes, the Uncrowned became a symbol of independence and the refusal to surrender personal sovereignty. His name was invoked in oaths, songs, and stories passed among rebellious generations.

Within the loyal Bloodlines, his memory served as a warning against the dangers of pride and ambition.

But even the most critical accounts acknowledged that Vaelthar had forced the Eternal Throne to confront a question that could not be resolved through military victory alone.

Whether the blood that created an immortal also granted the right to govern them.

The Legacy of the First War
A Kingdom Divided
The First War ended with the military victory of the Eternal Throne, but its consequences transformed vampiric civilization permanently.

The loyal Bloodlines preserved their allegiance to Lavínia and continued developing the institutions of the Eternal Dominion. The Clans and Houses that remained beneath the Throne strengthened their political and military organizations, while the Eternal Court refined the laws intended to prevent another conflict of comparable magnitude.

The Hordes established independent traditions beyond the authority of the Throne, and the Outcasts continued their solitary existence outside the recognized political structures of the immortal world.

The divisions created by the Crimson Schism would survive long after the fortresses of the First War had fallen into ruin.

Centuries later, vampires who had never witnessed the conflict would still inherit its consequences through the oaths of their Bloodlines and the organizations to which they belonged.

The Eternal Division
The oldest chronicles conclude that the First War was not truly a conflict between good and evil. It was a struggle between competing understandings of immortality, responsibility, and freedom.

The loyalists believed that the First Blood carried an obligation to preserve the civilization created by the Eternal Source.

The rebels believed that the gift of eternity did not require perpetual political obedience.

And the Outcasts believed that neither cause possessed the right to determine the destiny of every immortal.

These convictions became the foundation of three paths that would continue to shape the realm.

The Clans — Sworn to the Eternal Throne.

The Hordes — Those Who Do Not Bow.

The Outcasts — Those Who Walk Alone.

The war had ended, but the conflict of ideals remained.

The Warning of the Eternal Source
According to the final pages of the Chronicle of the Crimson Schism, Lavínia addressed the surviving representatives of the Bloodlines after the judgment of the rebels.

She reminded them that the Eternal Throne had not been created merely to command, but to preserve the continuity of a civilization whose origins reached back to Eden itself.

She warned that the destruction of a Bloodline was never a victory without consequence, for every vampire carried an inheritance that could never be restored once extinguished.

The chronicles preserve her final declaration:

"Let no crown convince you that you stand above the blood of your ancestors. Let no rebellion convince you that freedom requires the destruction of your own kind. Kingdoms shall rise, banners shall fall, and even the oldest names may be forgotten. But the First Blood shall remember."

The First War became a defining chapter in the history of DawnDream. It established the divisions that would shape future generations, revealed the limits of authority within the immortal realm, and demonstrated that even beings capable of surviving centuries could not escape the consequences of pride, loyalty, and ambition.

Yet the peace that followed was fragile.

The surviving Hordes remembered their defeat. The loyal Bloodlines remembered their dead. Ancient fortresses remained abandoned, and the wounds of the Crimson Schism continued to influence the politics of the immortal world.

In time, those unresolved grievances would contribute to another conflict, one whose destruction would surpass anything witnessed during the First War.

The Blood War.

For the First War had divided the immortals. The next would threaten to destroy them.
